Museo de Antropologia – Anthropology Museum in Mexico City

Yesterday I went to the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City with an anthropology class from the Seminary. It’s a great place to learn about Mexican culture and history. Here are some shots I got while there.

Brutal Burgers

I think they should rename this burger place. Not sure I want to eat a place called “Brutal Burgers.”

Snow in Mexico City

Posted by Dennis On February - 19 - 2010

Well, it’s not snowing in the city, but there is snow on the mountains. Today on the way to work, I noticed that there was snow on one of the mountains. Not one of the super high altitude volcanoes (although there is snow on them, too). I took a picture from the bridge by my office, but you can’t really see it all that well. (NOTE: I’m pretty sure this picture IS of a volcano. I think it’s Ajusco, a volcano in the south of the city. I’ve never seen this one from the north of the city before)

It has something to do with the fact that the rain washed everything away and the air seems clearer than normal, but today I feel like new mountains have appeared overnight with a little snow on the top. It’s pretty nice.

Super Bowl in Mexico

Posted by Dennis On February - 7 - 2010

Today was Super Bowl Sunday, which means a lot to me, since I’m a big football fan. This year we noticed more and more ads for Super Bowl parties here in Mexico City. I also noticed that they were showing the big game on the big screen in the movie theaters.

We went to a Super Bowl party at our church. They had sort of an “NFL Experience” type thing where they invited people to come and do different “American football” drills, had competitions, and then watched the game. We didn’t stay to watch the game there. We prefer to watch it at home.

I think American football is getting more popular here, especially in our part of Mexico City. I’m pretty sure that Mark Sanchez had something to do with that. It’s amazing how many Jets fans there are in Mexico City now that he’s their quarterback.

By the way, the Saints cheerleaders were in a mall here in our part of town earlier in the season. Here’s a quick video of them:

Saw this up at La Cuspide and thought it was hilarious. We’ve been waiting a while to video it.

Is it a Dog or a Lion?

Posted by Dennis On June - 1 - 2009

I have never seen anything like this anywhere else but Mexico. There is a dog in my neighborhood who either thinks he’s a lion, or his owners wanted a lion but could only find a dog at the pet store.

A Day Out in Mexico City

Here’s a video of Mexico City I took last year.

They’ll Deliver What?

Posted by Dennis On May - 8 - 2009

Here in Mexico City, there is a delivery service for almost everything. Everyday I see motorcycles delivering mail, pizza, groceries, and even sushi. But I never knew that they would deliver beer.

I was listening to the radio on Wednesday while driving to the airport, and I heard a commercial for “grupo modelo”, the company that makes Corona beer that was talking about a hotline that they have in Mexico City. You just call it, and they will deliver your beer right to your house.

Apparently, you can call anytime from 7 am to 5 pm from Monday through Friday or from 7 am to 3 pm on Saturday, and they will show up at your door with your Corona.

You know, for those days when it’s an emergency and you can’t get out of the house (like when you’re waiting for swine flu to pass).

How to Wash Your Hands

Posted by Dennis On May - 7 - 2009

I saw this at the airport yesterday…it was on the big screen that tells the flight information.

If you don’t speak Spanish, or can’t read the words on the screen, it basically is teaching you how to wash your hands in 6 steps. I thought it was funny.

Opportunistic Businesses

Posted by Dennis On May - 5 - 2009

I just went to the grocery store in my area of Mexico City to pick up some groceries. Heading out of the parking lot, I saw something that caught my eye.

It’s not unusual to see people selling stuff out of their cars here. Basically, they park on the side of the road, pop the trunk, and hang up what they are selling. I’ve seen toilet seat covers, pajamas, puppies, and other things for sale. But today I saw something that I hadn’t seen before.

On the side of the road was someone selling custom masks for swine flu. Now that is opportunistic. You can’t find the regular ones in the stores, but you can find some on the side of the road being sold out of the trunk of a car.
